Working Through Difficulty
2017 has challenged me in many ways. July and August presented difficult situations which have brought forward uneasy emotions. Practicing mindfulness has been particularly difficult during this time. However, I know inner work is most crucial when you are faced with life’s obstacles. The healthiest approach to dealing with situations is by working on mindfulness and restoring inner peace.
I have learned and accepted that there are so many layers to life, to people and to situations. Life can really get complex and sometimes things are beyond our control. Below are some of the things that have helped me push through.
Reading
Read up lifting books that improve your outlook and spirits. You could get something out of reading a comedic book that cheers you up or a fictional book that takes you to another place. How about a biography that inspires you or a self-help book to gain a different perspective.
Books hold so much value and purpose and we can sometimes take for granted how lucky we are to have them. Some of my favourite books are Yoga For Life by Colleen Saidman Yee, Shoe Dog by Phil Night and A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle
Become Active
Being active is one of many ways to help keep your life balanced. You can start by taking simple steps like going for a short walk or spending a few minutes meditating. You can start to increase the time gradually. Once you get into a good routine you should be able to feel a positive difference because being active helps us to reward ourselves both mentally and physically.
Self-Love
Self-love is one of the most important things you could practice as you are gifted with a life and you are a valuable person, regardless of how society, people make you feel.
Writing a self-love journal and being grateful for what you have helps you to see yourself in a more positive light. Another way to practice self-love is by paying attention to self-care. Learn to look after you more and nurture yourself. I personally have pampering sessions and ensure to spend some quality time with myself.
It is all about you developing a positive relationship with yourself and the benefits are endless. Below are a few examples:
- You start to be more conscious
- You do not base your self-worth on how others treat you
- You start to understand that you are worthy
- You feel empowered
Practice Wellness
Wellness helps people in a psychological and physiological way. I allocate some time before I sleep to meditate most nights. I also try to connect with nature when I can, by taking walks through my local park.
Routine
Starting and maintaining a good routine is a good way to manage your time and balance your life. A healthy routine helps me bring more order to my life and helps me create a good flow during the day.
Routine helps to invite the following into your life:
- Structure
- Organisation.
- Stability
- Balance
Aromatherapy
Personally, I swear by aromatherapy. It is an old practice that has been used to help improve well-being. I can honestly say I have benefited from implementing aromatherapy into my life.
Aromatherapy practice extracts natural oils from nature. For example, orange essential oil is extracted from the peel of the orange, while Sandalwood is extracted from trees.
All the oils hold beneficial properties that range from being antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antidepressant and more. I encourage you to research further to find out about the different oils, and their uses.
You can reap their benefits by:
- Burning the oils in a diffuser
- Diluting and mixing the oils with a nice cream or massage oil
- Add a few drops into a bath
- Steam inhalation
- Mix water and a few drops of essential oil into a spritzer
It is very important to note that you should use essential oils with care as the oils are concentrated and due to their strength, dilution is necessary to reduce the risk of skin irritation.
Everyone works through challenging emotions differently and it can feel very isolating. Often, it is hard to see past the pain. I have found working on yourself to be the most effective way to overcome the difficulty.
Inner work + Positive attitude + Self-love + Mindfullness = Inner strength
