Aromatherapy has been practised for thousands of years and has continued to serve us in a variety of ways.
The oils are used in medicines, cosmetics, recipes, rituals and spas frequently for their aroma, medicinal, ceremonial and therapeutic benefits.
Most recently, essential oils have been used in hospitals as clinical complimentary treatments in patient care. This is a positive sign that shows how marrying modern medicines and holistic services together can greatly help with improving well being.
Emotions
Our emotions vary and the feelings we experience can unsettle us at times. Essential oils are useful as we can implement them daily to help us with our emotions. There are oils that help to relax, de-stress, boost mood, and stimulate our senses.
One of my go-to oils is Frankincense which serves to help with a number of areas. It is an oil that has the potential to balance hormones and can be used to relieve depression and anxiety symptoms.
Body
Your body is amazing because of its abilities and functions. Aromatherapy is used as a complementary treatment to assist in improving body's health. The oils may not completely heal you but they can help to relieve symptoms.
Spirituality Rituals
Aromatherapy is often used in spiritual ceremonies with signature oils for certain rituals. Below are some examples:
Cleansing - Lemon, Cypress, Myrrh, Juniper Berry
Grounding/Meditation - Frankincense, Sandalwood, Vertiver
Gratitude - Neroli, Orange, Ylang Ylang Grapefruit, Bergamot
Grief - Frankincense, Sandalwood, Helichrysum
Purifying Oils
Aromatherapy oils can be used to refresh, cleanse and purify the air. Here are examples of Purifying Oils:
Eucalyptus
Peppermint
Cinnamon
Lavender
Animals
Our animal friends can also benefit from essential oils too and vets are prescribing essential oils increasingly over the years to aid in healing. As the oils are strong and powerful you should always consult a vet or a certified practitioner that can provide you with information on safety precautions and advice.
Romantic
Aromatherapy oils can be used to filter a lovely aroma throughout your house that sets a tone for a romantic setting. Here are some sensual oils you can use:
Rose
Neroli
Patchouli
Jasmine
Cleaning oils
Using essential oils for cleaning is a green way to keep your home fresh and clean.
Some essential oils have antimicrobial, antiseptic, anti-fungal and antiviral properties. Below are a few great cleaning oils to use around your living space:
Lemon
Tea Tree
Rosemary
Lavender
Most oils are versatile as they offer multiple properties and although some people are sceptical, scientists are discovering factual evidence that shows that aromatherapy can help to provide physiological and emotional benefits.
You can enjoy aromatherapy with these following methods
- Massage
- Defuser
- Mixed with a carrier oil to apply topically (on the skin) as a cream
- Digested only with the guidance and advice from an authorised practitioner
- As a cleaning agent
It is also important to highlight the importance of research as certain oils are not suitable for everyone. For instance, Rosemary is a stimulating oil which is not recommended for individuals that suffer from seizures because it could prompt an attack. Certain citrus oils should avoid being used in direct sunlight as they can be photosensitive, causing permanent damage in some cases.
